"Reader choice has been identified by several researchers as key in developing high motivation and high performance in reading" (Pressley, Dolezal, Raphael, Mohan, Roehrig, and Bogner, 2003). The books I have requested came directly from our students. In an effort to increase independent reading, foster a reading community, develop student discussions and relationships, explore diverse cultures and characters, and ultimately, improve literacy scores, our middle school wants to grow our classroom libraries. Our students explored various websites and selected their top 3 choices for books they would like to read. Adding brand new, current books to our shelves would be exciting for students, as most of our selection is worn out and dated. Our diverse students don't often get to see themselves reflected in books, but more and more modern books are catching up and telling stories that the different cultures that attend our school can relate to. We are eager to include as many of these diverse books as we can in our school.
