The classroom library that I inherited is dated. The kids are having a tough time identifying with predominantly white characters and lack relevance to their lives. I want my students to see themselves in their reading. Having books with characters that look like them and live in similar situations will help develop a love for reading that they may not have found yet. Many of my students are reading below grade level. I really think that having these new books will go a long way to help them become on grade level readers.
