It takes English Language Learners approximately 5 year to become proficient in any given language. When our ESL students enter the U.S. school system as 10th, 11th, and sometimes even as 12th graders they face the unique challenge of learning a new language, passing required classes and demonstrating proficiency in state standardized exams in less the 4 years. With structured in-class support, mandated modifications and accommodations, many are able to pass their required classes but are unable to graduate because they can not pass state standardized exams. Once they pass all required high school classes, they are exited out of school and are left without any support or resources to help them to study and pass their state exams in order to graduate and prepare for their future. A few teacher and I stay connected with our students and help them study after school and on weekends but we lack effective resources that provide alternative ways to help them study, review and learn content in Math, Science, English and Social Studies in order to help them prepare for their standardized exams.
