The students are 6th graders between the ages of 10 to 12 years old. They attend a school that was built in 1926 located in a community of 2500 residence. The school is unique because it is only for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders with a class size of 90 students. The students range from middle class to poverty. The unemployment rate is 9% with the local railroad car shops closing last spring and another plant closing down soon. Being from a small town many students have seen live chickens in a feed store or on someones farm but not had the experience of watching them develop then care for their needs.
