This year, I was teaching my third grade students one day, with my shoes off. I was met with the challenge to put them back on. (This is one of the things I enjoy the most about them!) I challenged my students right back and from then on, we became a no-shoe classroom. I believe this has many benefits on the learning process. The very first one being the level of comfort and trust that it brings. My goal is to allow my students to feel comfortable and relaxed in a place that can so often be met with worries and frustration. To do this, I want to provide seat sacks as well as a pair of slippers for each of my students. Although I see many benefits to eliminating the mandate for shoes, I do see certain safety concerns. Providing slippers would allow for a quick shoe to put on to go places, especially in case of an emergency. I would also love to provide the comfortable option for those students whose financial situation may leave them with battered socks or shoes. The seat sacks would provide a place for my students to place their outside shoes / slippers when not in use. This can eliminate the clutter in our classroom as well as tripping hazards. My goal is to give my students a place where they can relax and feel at home. In doing so, I hope to create an even better environment to increase their learning. I do hope you see the benefits in our goal!
