Teaching special education can often become an exercise in helping students to catch up with students in other classes. When catching up becomes the focus students who struggle begin to believe that they cannot be successful much less contribute anything original. The poetry corner is for classes of ELA Special Education students to read their original works of poetry and short fiction. As many struggle with oral reading, this gives students a further opportunity to practice their reading skills while being affirmed by their classmates. Everyone has something great inside of them to share. This project will be a regular reminder that students, regardless of learning challenges, are valued and their contributions welcomed. With this project we will create a reading area for students that will reinforce the importance of what they are sharing.
