This student, like many in my class, are gifted in speech and language, but has a difficult time expressing his thoughts clearly on paper. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, with colorful stories to tell representing their cultural heritage and backgrounds. Students from China, Africa, India, Mexico, South America, Eastern Europe, and from all over the United States come together as a community in our classroom, and we unite through discovery of language, literature, and history. Our school is classified as "high poverty", since most of my students are on free and reduced lunch programs, but their families' financial struggles only serve to motivate them to change their future. They love to write and journal almost daily. Recently, we began a pen pal relationship with a school in Madrid, Spain. Some of my students were embarrassed at their lack of mastery of our written language, and most were raised speaking and writing in English!
