Every child is a different kind of flower, and all together, makes this world a beautiful garden. The rocks, paint brushes, and paint will reflect on what makes each student special, because they get to paint it. The students will have a chance to see the beauty in diversity and how coming together makes things beautiful. The layout of our Kindness Garden will have twelve tires stacked in the center of a circle. The tires will be characters such as a lady bug, bumble bee, frog, different farm animals and more. Each tire will be painted by the K4-First grade classes. The Kindness rocks painted by the 2nd-5th grade students will be placed around the perimeter of the circle. We will also have picnic tables in front and on each side of the circle. In addition, we will have four wooden planter boxes. We plan on letting each grade level plant something in the boxes and tires each year, as well as maintain and nourish throughout the school year. Our Kindness Garden targets are gardening, social/emotional learning and kindness matters/bullying. Having a kindness garden has proven to increase student's science achievement scores, increase knowledge of nutrition and their willingness to consume fresh produce, improve skills by cultivating empathy and teamwork, improves emotional literacy, develop a sense of community and responsibility, instill lifelong appreciation for the natural world, cater to students with diverse learning styles, engage and focus students who may otherwise exhibit disciplinary issues in the classroom and instill a sense of school pride in students, teachers, and administrators.
