Reading experts agree that the single most important factor to a child's success as a reader is the volume of reading that they do. Simply put, students who read more are better readers. In an age of technology and testing, we have lost some of the love and passion for reading, and I am trying to get it back. As a book lover myself, the thing I am most proud of as a teacher is when I see my students choose to pick up books for fun and not put them down until they are finished. Students in my class read a lot and because of that, they need more books in our classroom library. A larger classroom library means more choices for students at an appropriate reading level, more access to books that they can and want to read, take home, share, and discuss, and it supports students in becoming lifelong readers. As you may know, I changed grade levels this year and my classroom library is light on middle school level books. I would like to add some more current and relevant new novels to my room. Experts say that every classroom should have at least 1,000 books. While I have worked diligently to build up my classroom library over my years of teaching, we still need more - especially with the amount of reading each student is doing! Each of the carefully curated library shelves will not only help one group of students but over the course of my career, will help every group of students that call my classroom their home. The greatest gift for any classroom is a way to make learning come alive for students and their teachers alike.
