This year at my school we have been doing a lot of work with equity, diversity, and antiracist teaching. We hope to teach all of our students to embrace the differences in everyone they meet with an open mind and kind heart. We began to have brave, not perfect discussions with our students focusing on terms like respect, racism, belonging, inclusion, culture and many others. We call this work Courageous Conversations. The importance of social emotional learning in today's ever-changing, uncertain world cannot be understated. This work is important and can and should start early. My kindergartners this year amazed me with their insights. As the year went along, I saw them grow and understand that we are all different in many different ways and that each way is important and valued. We use books as a stepping off point when teaching Courageous Conversations. They all carefully selected to include a diversity of authors and characters. This year, we used mostly digital books since we were remote most of the year. I would like to have a set of these books in my classroom for my incoming kindergartners to be able to read and revisit throughout the school year. These books have characters and authors of different races, backgrounds and cultures. It is so important that each of my students feels valued and can see themselves in the books I have in my classroom. These books will not only help with our Courageous Conversations but will help to highlight people from different walks of life as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, and others.
