Representation matters. Imagine picking up a book and for the first time the main character looks like you, talks like you, thinks like you, or has a similar experience to yours. I have the privilege of working with a culturally diverse population of students, students who are LGBTQ+, immigrant students, those struggling with mental illnesses or eating disorders, and more. Reading these books will help my students feel less alone and will empower them to find the strength to face the challenges they experience in their lives. It also gives an opportunity for those who wish to develop their empathy and learn about the experiences of others.
