When I was in fifth grade, math was my worst subject and I felt stupid. I'm on a mission to make math magical for all of my students, reminding them daily that they are smart and can do hard things (like fractions!) and that if they can do math with me, they can do math anywhere. Math is my favorite thing to teach because math is magical but I didn't always feel that way. These materials like the tower cubes and fraction tiles will make a difference in students' learning by giving them physical and visual examples of fractions to manipulate while they learn by discovering equivalent fractions and comparing fractions with visual examples rather than numerical concepts. We will be working with fractions such as fractions with unlike denominators, like determining how much pizza we get to eat if we have one-fourth pepperoni pizza and two-thirds pineapple pizza. This is a tough concept and these math manipulatives will be game changers. Our game spinners and Expo markers will help make fractions fun by making learning into games much like fraction dominoes. These games and manipulatives will also offer my students with special needs an avenue to show their learning in ways other than written work.
