Most of the books in my classroom library have been collected over the years, donated to me by other teachers, purchased at garage sales, or purchased from Scholastic Book fund donors. I have always told them to read it and return it unless they love it, and then they can keep it. Most books do come back, but I've lost quite a few over the years because of my love-it-keep-it policy. That makes me happy, because then I know they've found a story they love. My own copy of Charlotte's Web is dilapidated due to how many times it's been read. My students are asking for new books and I can't let them down! Showing an interest in new books is half the battle. Children need to read regularly to improve their reading skills. We need some new, relevant titles that will keep my readers engaged. My goal is to offer a wide range of genres and reading levels for my students. Their independent reading levels in 4th grade range from 1st grade to almost 6th grade, so a variety is needed. Literacy and reading comprehension are paramount in every subject in school and beyond. A classroom library should offer endless variety and possibilities for students to learn from and enjoy. This project is for book sets to replace high-interest lost books. The book sets I have chosen are highly recommended, award-winning books. Many of them include stories about animals, which is a big request this year.
