Being in rural Maine, access to the ocean is something these students may never have. As a science teacher whose undergraduate degree is in marine biology, I want to help bring the ocean to my students. My goal is to set up a coral reef tank, which is highly diverse from the ocean that some students may encounter in their lives on the coast of Maine. This coral reef tank will be used for earth science courses, environmental science, chemistry, and biology courses shared among the science department. This will give them examples of how chemicals are cycled through environments, how chemicals are balanced to support life, and how species interact with one another. Mini-models are great to also teach animal husbandry while teaching our lessons. Tank set up is expensive as caring for these organisms is delicate, so having a heavy-duty filter is crucial to maintaining their livelihoods. Plus, their temperature stability is important to keeping their homeostasis.
