Most of my students face the challenge of learning English as a second language, coming from homes where no English is spoken. The text books are challenging because they are written at a grade level or above. They can read most of the words, but comprehension is a challenge. I have found using literature circles is a wonderful teaching tool which promotes in depth understanding of vocabulary, main elements of literature, reading comprehension and team work. The student led discussions are most compelling. The students are much more comfortable discussing stories with each other than answering questions in front of the whole class. Literature circles give them the opportunity to practice spoken English instead of listening to me lecture. Watching them grow in confidence and English skills is immensely rewarding.
