House on Mango Street is an essential text in expanding students' understanding of storytelling in diverse communities. Using this text as our model, we read and perform Cisneros' vignettes as our own and use her work as an anchor text to write and edit our own vignettes in class. This is a form of writing many students have never seen before and it feels fresh and accessible to them. Sandra Cisneros' book is a student favorite for character, style, and voice development. Esperanza is one of the most meaningful young characters in all of literature.
