My children learn how important it is to make literacy a part of themselves. They practice "sharing their light" with one another. They find themselves in the characters brought to us in these Newbery Award winning titles. My students learn that they are not so different from one another, regardless of their socio-economic level or the color of their skin or what their family is like. They like placing themselves into settings and stories they have not yet been able to experience. They find compassion, empathy, mystery, etc. in their everyday reading lives. Through literature we all learn to respect each other's likenesses and differences.
