With new classroom microscopes, our bright students will have the opportunity to begin working in a lab like the scientists and doctors many of them aspire to become. Even in 5th grade, our scholars have lofty and specific goals: One young scholar told me she wants to become a thoracic surgeon! They all will benefit from the practical, hands-on exploration of scientific concepts that are now limited to paper, lecture, or video. Slides displayed on a digital microscope that feeds a class live stream will ensure that our distance learners attending class from home will not be left out. Student microscopes will enable students to build lab skills like mounting slides and focusing compound lenses. My students will also get to compare actual specimens when we learn about plant and animal cells. We will also look for living microorganisms in pond water and hopefully find tardigrades from moss we gather from our community.
