These multi-modal learners are hungry for opportunities to learn using all their senses. Deaf and hard-of-hearing kiddos take in information any way they can, but especially using their eyes and hands. Imagine learning the alphabet by writing letters in a sand tray or building beginning words out of putty or on a gel pad. Students who are hard-of-hearing and have low-vision will be drawn to lessons involving a light panel and colorful translucent manipulatives for counting and spelling words. Many of the calming visual and tactile items will also allow for sensory regulation & use during listening breaks. Some of our deaf students using cochlear implants and hearing aids need listening breaks. Some of our youngest students become dysregulated and need calming sensory breaks like finding a cozy break spot and squeezing a thermal ball or taking deep breaths while watching the glitter settle in the sensory tube or having a cuddly puppy shoulder wrap. All of these materials will be well loved by some incredible learners!
