In my work with middle school students, anxiety and stress are the most common reasons they come to visit me in my counseling office. In 7 years as a counselor, I have learned that brief breaks are the most effective way to teach students how to cope with stress. My school has designated a large room for the counseling department to use as a sensory/calming space. The materials in my project will enhance the two stations we currently have for students to rest, center and calm before they get back to their challenging academic and social lives. Fuzzy rugs, comfy meditation seats and hanging murals will make the space a world away from school, if only for a few minutes.
