My elementary students come from many backgrounds. In these uncertain and racially-charged times, it is vital for them to see themselves on the convers and in the pages of contemporary novels written by people of color. It is important for me to assist them in discussing these issues. Providing my students novels written by people of color will help bridge cultural gaps and ease tensions as we learn together to truly see each other and appreciate all colors, religions, and genders. I want to affect change in the world, but I cannot do it alone. We will not be silent.
