It's hard to find curriculum for older Newcomer English Learners that is accessible but not insulting. My students don't want to read kindergarten books, yet they need to build basic English. They are supposed to write about their world, but they aren't experiencing life right now. They need art that inspires them to dig deeper into academic topics. They need to learn things that are so exciting, they will want to learn and use words that are unfamiliar. National Geographic photographs are the perfect bridge between cultures and language abilities. We will be able to use these high interest images to study endangered animals from around the world. There are twelve thousand species in this one volume. In order to cover them, we have to work together. Often, ambitious students want to do all the work in group projects themselves. This is impossible when there are so many creatures in need of their attention. From a practical perspective, I love that each page has enough images for every member of a group, everyday. Researching diets, habitats, and anatomy is a great project across grade levels and language abilities. Finally, I'm asking donors to choose my project because we all need challenging, wonderful work to distract us from a terrible year.
