S.E. Hinton’s classic novel The Outsiders is a story that follows two rival gangs who learn to accept each other in spite of their differences. This book accompanies our current curriculum, but due to Covid restrictions and safety, we want every student to have his/her own copy. This novel will not only help my students to master the TN State Standards, but it will more importantly help them to answer our unit’s essential question “What makes you, you?” By exploring and analyzing the characters and their choices, they will learn the importance of empathizing with others and evaluating their own pre-conceived judgments about people who are not like themselves.
