Turn to page 147. Now we will read the weekly story from our reading series. Sleepy eyes, yawns, heads rested on desks........ "Just one more chapter!" "Noooooo, don't stop reading there! "When are we going to read our books today?" The engagement that can be both seen and heard in my classroom when reading chapter books versus the "regular" reading book is not even comparable. Do I get discussion from the "regular" reading book stories? Not at all. Do I have former students from years ago still bring up chapter books we read in class? Absolutely! Not to mention, these are historical fiction. Students are learning history through our chapter books. History.....and they are excited about it.....and want to hear more!! Seeing my students excited about reading makes my teacher heart grow and grow!
