Feeling welcomed in a classroom is hugely important for middle school students. For some of my students, school is the only stable place they know, so I want it to be richly engaging and suited to their needs. Some of my students also have significant challenges with attention and hyperactivity, so these materials will help them stay engaged by giving them a productive focus of their attention (inspirational posters, bouncy bands for their chairs, alternative seating). I want to build a safe space that my students are excited to return to every day, with materials that help them to be productive and learn to their fullest ability. I chose materials that help my students stay engaged in their learning by giving them a classroom that they see themselves reflected in. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are a popular choice by my students--I've yet to see a reluctant reader who didn't love them! The printer and laminator will also benefit my students because right now all classroom materials must be laminated so that they can be disinfected. As such, these students currently do not get to use manipulatives because the paper materials cannot be shared. The printer and laminator also benefit my students because I can print, laminate, and hang up student work so they see themselves reflected in their classroom and feel a sense of pride in their work. Thank you for your time and consideration. It is a hard year to be a student, but I will always do my best to support my students' learning and growth, both academic and emotional.
