I believe my purpose as a middle school English teacher is to inspire kids to fall in love with reading. A passion for reading is such an important foundation for all kinds of higher learning. Reading teaches us how to be better people: to be empathetic, to be curious, and to foster a love for learning new things. Good readers become good writers. They are also critical thinkers. If I can plant the seed of a love for reading now, it will blossom into something wonderful later on in their lives. This year, I challenged my students to reach for a high goal: read 25 books by the end of the school year. We call this the 8th grade reading challenge! Every week, I pick a book to share aloud that I think might interest my students. I try to pick from all genres, and sometimes I share a book with specific kids in mind. As a first year teacher, however, my classroom library is quite small. I am able to take the kids to our school library, but I would love to have a great selection of high-interest young adult novels on my shelves as well. I believe that all students have the ability to fall in love with reading. Students who "hate" to read just haven't found the right book yet! Help me get the right book in these students' hands!
