Many of my students claim they dislike reading, because they never enjoyed their English classes. However, it is clear that the traditional literature assigned in the textbooks do not allow my group of students to see themselves or their own life experiences to draw connections to. The novel "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison is a powerful piece of literature that brings many culturally relevant topics to life in the most poetically painful way. This novel will allow my students to analyze and discuss these topics in a safe space. In addition, students will be able to enjoy a story that provides them with a mirror to see themselves, a window to see the world around them, and a door to explore and go beyond their own households and community. This novel will provide the opportunity to show students how literature can make extremely impactful statements on society, and how investing in a fictional character and life lessons can truly be life changing. Students will have a book in hand to obtain the true feeling of an ELA classroom versus the digital one that they have been struggling in.
