Most of our preschool students with disabilities use a total communication approach. This means that they use a combination of words, signs, pictures, pointing, and gestures to communicate their wants and needs. Individual communication binders will hold small visuals (pictures) and Velcro strips to allow students to communicate their wants and needs and to make choices. This use of visuals often leads to either increased verbal expression or an improved understanding of visual communication that can lead to students being able to use high tech alternative or augmentative communication devices.
