In a typical year, students in my class have opportunities to be exposed to not only the state standards but also to participate in community-based instruction and vocational training. This typically looks like field trips in which we navigate our community as pedestrians and "ride the Rabbit" (utilize public transportation), volunteer with a local church to prepare for their fall and spring yard sales, and use currency to make purchases at the local Royal Farm. Furthermore, students are able to connect with agencies that provide them with job experiences and job coaches, post-secondary counseling, and interagency planning. Due to COVID, many of our hands-on learning activities and in-person coordination with community agencies have been moved virtual or put on hold. These tablets will enable my students to access valuable apps, especially newly developed vocational games such as SimCoach, to practice social, functional, and vocational skills in a simulated, virtual environment.
