Diverse texts will help my students feel represented in the texts they read. It will also help many students learn more about cultures they may have never been exposed to. It will also help students of those cultures feel valued and included. This will help create a classroom community of inclusivity and acceptance. My students are much more engaged when they are learning about someone they feel like they can relate to. By choosing texts with characters that are their age and look like them, they will be more motivated to read and excited to learn and relate to the characters. Students understand and empathize more effectively the more they are exposed to. The more books they have access to, the more likely they are to make a connection with an author or character and fall in love with reading.
