We are sixth grade teachers at a charter school and like many schools, we have transitioned to distance learning. We have been at it for about a month now and we have seen some amazing things. Compared to last year's distance learning we went to live teaching via zoom and the results have been SPECTACULAR! We are averaging about 90-95% attendance rate compared to the very minimal engagement we had with video-recorded lessons. Our students are smiling and being active in the learning process every day. With all of the fantastic things we have seen, there are some heartbreaking things that have paralleled this journey. It is in homes where there is limited space for students to find a quiet learning space. We just had a 1-1 check-in with my students and the looks on some of their faces when we were trying to talk was heartbreaking. Complete frustration that we couldn't complete a simple task while young siblings were in the background and other family members we going about daily life.  The noise made it hard to talk on computers so we had to resort to thumbs up or down if they understood. We would hope that all students could find a good quiet space to learn but the reality is, there isn't always that option. Our goal is to purchase noise-canceling headphones for our students to help them find that quiet space even if the environment is not. We know things are tight during the holiday season and with COVID running rampant but any help can make the world of difference for these students. Please help us turn the sound of home off and the sound of learning ON! Thank you for your consideration.
