Engaging students remotely while covering the NGSS Standards is a challenge. Several standards can be investigated for electricity while engaging students online. Students can look at the criteria and define the constraints of a design problem. They can develop a model to test their design solution with the proper materials. Designs can be analyzed and modified in workspace at home. As I look ahead to our Electricity and Magnetism Unit, I would like to put a battery, 2-3 bulbs, and some wires in their hands so we can do a hands-on lab to discover series and parallel circuits. I will need the requested materials as well as envelopes and a little bubble wrap to address and send each student the materials they need. With parents working full-time, it is not possible or equitable to expect students to pick up these materials in person at school. Designing series and parallel circuits with the requested components will engage student learning even during the pandemic.
