When students only know poetry as complicated sentences, archaic language, and topics that seem irrelevant in their current lives, they check out and miss out. Help my students see the value of poetry in their lives by bringing them Clint Smith's 2016 collection, Counting Descent. Students will explore topics relevant to life today as they read poems centering the Black experience in America. Smith's poetry brings life to Black identity, struggles, pride, Black joy, and so much more. Smith is a young Black poet, a 2014 National Poetry Slam champion, and a TED speaker who just earned his PhD from Harvard.

About my class
