In my classroom many of my students are working on learning self regulation and calm down strategies to work through big feelings. We have many tools to help teach this skill in the classroom, and these are all available in our "safe place." The safe place is a cozy corner of the room where our students can go to safely explore their feelings and learn to solve problems, effectively calm down, and ask for help when they need it. Students are able to use pictures, books, sensory viewers, items of different textures and sizes to help them learn these skills. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all of my students are learning from home and no longer have access to the safe place to work through any frustration or other big feelings they may have. This project will allow me to give every single student their own at home safe place to use whenever they need it. We will teach students and families how to effectively use these items to help their students to work through big feelings and be more ready for learning. These are skills that will not only help our students emotionally and throughout the school day, but will help set students up with skills they will need throughout their life.
