Sewing and working with textiles is something extremely special to me. Sewing also gives students some real life skills many adults are missing. Every fourth grader will go to middle school with life skills of how to fix a hem and sew a button on along with many other skills. Students will also learn about the history of community-based sewing projects and how they were a way to be hopeful and help the community throughout the years. Not every students connects with every art form, so my job is to make sure the students can try as many things as it takes for them to find "their thing" that sparks joy and excitement. Growing up right here in Nashville, my Nana taught me how to sew and to create things with my own two hands. It was a bonding experience and there is nothing like the pride you have when getting to show off something you have made. Sewing machines will completely change how I can teach sewing and fibers. My after school fashion club, which is provided at no cost to families, will also benefit greatly from having sewing machines. Our first project using the machines will be a collaborative quilt that is based on the idea of "dreams". This will be hung in the auditorium at our school to remember how we can achieve our dreams.
