The mission of Pearl-Cohn Magnet High School Project SOAR (Supporting Opportunities for Athletes to Rise) is to create a foundational program that reflects a positive image in the community through academic and on field athletic experiences that lead to student-athlete’s admission into college. I am the head football coach and I teach health fitness classes as well. Project SOAR is designed to provide upgrades for our school weight room facility which is used for class curriculum courses and athletics. Since 1994, the program has established a winning tradition both on the field and in the classroom. . Our football team boasts a 100% graduation rate from high school, sending over 140 student’s athletes to college with scholarships with 77% of those students graduating college. The players that don't earn football scholarship are in positions for academic scholarships to further their education. Located in the zip code 37208, known for both football success & being an impoverished area, 99% of our students receive free lunch. Our program functions on a modest budget with the operational cost outweighing the annual revenue for the athletic season. This equipment is over 16 years old, rusting out and safety is a concern. It makes students and players susceptible to staff infections during class activities & workouts. Even though my school is located in one of the most impoverished regions in Nashville, our community has consistently rallied in support of our students in fundraising. However, due to damages caused by tornadoes in early March & the Covid-19 virus in late March, all fundraising activities for sports and sport facilities were crippled and have been nonexistent. Your support is vital toward improving student fitness awareness, obesity, and the development of student athletes. This will help eliminate sports injuries which are more susceptible without proper muscle building.
