My students love to sing and perform for each other in class and as a performing ensemble in the community. They also have a natural curiosity about how things were done in the past. This project pairs a vintage record player with a state-of-the-art Karaoke machine. Students will be able to take a step back in time, dress in period clothing, and listen to vinyl records 33s, 45s and 78s playing oldies but goodies like the Jackson 5, The Beatles, and Aretha Franklin! They will also enjoy taking turns singing their favorite tunes to accompaniment tracks streamed through the Blue-Tooth Karaoke machine, synching this device to their cell phones or iPads. Music builds a bridge from the past to the present and helps children to appreciate the many ways in which they can express themselves, their diversity and their hope for a better future. In addition to these two cool music devices, I have also included a few picture books one on rap music and a modern-day folk song book that embraces various cultures and family customs that are celebrated through music. The Social and Emotional music workbook will assist me with creating a calming and caring climate as the students continue to navigate through virtual and/or blended learning.
