A saltwater aquarium will enhance learning opportunities for our students regarding coral reef systems and their importance to sustaining life on earth. With the proper equipment we can grow a healthy community of organisms to learn from and inspire our students to protect our coral reefs and keep our oceans healthy for future generations. Please consider donating to ensure our students at Harris-Hillman School in Nashville, TN are able to experience the wonder of life in an ocean coral reef system. My Project Students will build a coral reef system from the foundation of live sand, salt water, ocean rock, facilitating the growth of coraline algae and adding other living organisms including fish, corals and anemones gradually. Students will learn how to balance the chemistry in the tanks through testing salinity, alkaline, pH, calcium, nitrates and nitrites By maintaining the tank over time, students will learn how different variables such as pH, light, and temperature, can affect the health and growth of the organisms. Students will also learn about nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon cycles and how they should be balanced naturally. They will see how these elements affect the living organisms when out of balance. Students will research and apply what healthy oceans mean to different species and how they sustain life on planet Earth.
