I work in a Title I school in a high-needs and low socioeconomic status area where my students are not provided with the proper technology tools that I feel would help them immensely. My district has provided all students with a standard Chromebook computer. Unfortunately, this technology is not suitable for early elementary age students. The use of a trackpad is next to impossible to master independently as kindergarteners’ fine motor skills are still developing. When completing assigned activities on online learning programs such as ST Math and iRead, I am noticing that most students with repetitive errors are struggling to master the trackpad on the Chromebooks. This is not surprising as many adults struggle with this as well and I feel that this technology is not developmentally appropriate for my kindergarten students. If my students are off by a tiny bit when they select a response to a question, they often click the incorrect answer by mistake. This leads to a great deal of frustration (understandably so) when the programs force them to engage in the same assignment again and again. Another barrier for my students is headphones, which are needed when using iRead and developing their phonemic awareness (knowledge of letter sounds and blending). My students are supplied with a pair of cheaply made headphones that are too big for their small heads and break and disconnect regularly. My fear is that my students will not have the tools they need to succeed when we inevitably return to distance learning due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in our area. I want my students to have the best school year possible this year. By eliminating some of these barriers I think my students will have a much more enjoyable time with online learning.
