When students are agitated or they are exhibiting unsafe behaviors, they sometimes have a difficult time calming down. They know that I have fun "toys" in my office that can help them calm down and focus their breathing or their thoughts to help them through the situation. With the ever-present concern over COVID-19, some of my most sought-after fidgets and tools aren't available for students, as I like to wait between 24 and 48 hours until they're available for different students to use to lessen the chance of cross-contamination. Having multiple fidgets and tools in my office for students to choose from will allow all students that I work with the opportunity to pick something that will be most calming and soothing to them. The quicker the students are able to re-regulate themselves, the quicker they are able to rejoin their classroom and their peers. If we do go into full-time remote learning, my "regulars" will be able to pick their favorite tool to take home with them, as we know that disruptions in schedules can throw many students for a loop. This will allow students to use their strategies at home that we've practiced at school, which will make the difficult transition from full-time school to remote learning a bit easier to manage.
