Alternative seating has been shown to have a significant impact on student engagement and behavioral issues. Additionally, research has shown that non traditional seating is beneficial for students who have difficult focusing and also students who have been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. Our goal is to increase the amount of alternative seating in our building and allow spaces for students to go and calm down by either self identifying or teacher recommendation. Many teachers and schools across the country are embracing the idea of offering nontraditional, or flexible, seating options for students. Furthermore, we know that sitting in the same spot for hours is no longer how many children learn. Flexible seating options spark creativity and increases focus, it is also helpful for students to use to calm down when upset or angry.
