The first graders at our school (5 classrooms) need individual magnetic boards, magnetic letters, and storage containers to support their foundation in literacy skills. The challenge for teachers is to supply individualized materials for student practice since we are unable to provide small group or center-type practice due to the pandemic. Our team is struggling to implement best practices used in previous years due to limited funding. We simply do not have enough manipulatives for students to have their own. The materials we have chosen are quality products which will last for many years to come. Magnetic letters provide opportunities for hands on learning which are much more suited for the way young children learn. This type of learning tool will keep a child engaged, especially a child who has attention issues or auditory processing difficulties. There is vast research evidence to support that using manipulative letters increase reading skills in children. Magnetic letters and magnetic boards will provide children the hands-on practice with letter-sound correspondence, blending words, fluency, and writing sounds (all foundational reading skills). A child’s time in first grade is the gateway to growing strong readers. Children need multiple approaches to access foundational reading skills. Solid phonics instruction, including work with letter tiles, provides support for all students regardless of reading level. Phonics instruction and practice is the key to student success.
