Like a lot of schools, we are currently doing virtual learning. As much as I love the hands on learning we do in our zoom sessions, students still need to complete math and science work. We have talked all year about how we can show our thinking when completing math problems; by pictures, diagrams, charts, algorithms, etc. but that has sure been tricky with this virtual learning. I initially had the students show their thinking in their math books but we ran into an issue with me actually being able to see their work. Holding it up over the zoom was too blurry. Parents tried taking photos and emailing them to me but then I had to save it, make comments and email it back to the students... way too many steps! I was then shown an online program called Kami, it was a life saver! I could upload a document (which thankfully interfaced with the program our school is using) and kids could complete their assignments online by typing or drawing directly on the document. They could turn it in to me and I could easily make comments or corrections and they could receive the feedback instantly. There is even a cool feature of adding stickers (what teacher doesn't love stickers). Kami has been amazing for helping these fourth graders show their thinking. Unfortunately our trial period has almost come to an end. We are asking for some money to be able to purchase a year subscription so that these fourth graders can continue to show me their great mathematical thinking. We are also asking for a set of mice so that student who struggle with the touchpad on their Chromebooks can use the mice to better maneuver and draw their pictures.
