First graders need more opportunities to be the six- and seven-year-olds that they are. The materials that I am requesting are to allow my students more time and opportunities to move and manipulate. In the age of COVID-19, students are relying more on technology and screens. In my school, we have moved the majority of our classwork onto the students' devices so they are prepared and familiar for if/when they need to learn remotely again. With increased independent screen-time, students need a release that is safe and age-appropriate. The stem materials, like Magnatiles, Legos, pony beads, pattern blocks, bristle shape blocks, and the engineering building blocks, will give students a chance to use their fine-motor skills, while using their creativity to build and create. The wobble chairs will provide students a chance to safely and discreetly move about in their own space while they work more independently this year. With COVID-19 among us, my number one job is to keep students safe and healthy. So, what belongs to one student is not shared or passed to another. This means that my students are moving their desks and chairs all day to where they need to be in the room. Lunch spots? Move your desks and chairs! Small group instruction? Bring your own chair to the table! Moving the furniture is a constant, and it gets noisy! The balls on the bottom would help eliminate the noise and distractions and keep my students focused on the task at hand.
