I would like to provide individual noise cancelling headsets with microphones to each of my students. Currently, students are learning at home. However, there is a possibility of going back to school later this year at an unknown date. These headsets will be equally as effective and impactful whether the students are at home or in the school building. When at home, a basic problem of the learning environment for many of our English Learners (ELs) is have a large family with multiple siblings that creates a noisy learning environment, making it hard for them to hear, but also embarrassing or impossible to unmute their microphone and practice their desperately needed speaking skills. Students also do assignments that require them to listen to information and then record a speaking response. These are all preparing them for their yearly English Proficiency exams that place them in their classes the following year. Though many of these students speak boldly with their friends, they often do poorly when speaking on the exam due to anxiety about speaking into a recording. Our school currently has enough headsets for small group sets of 5-6 per intervention classroom of EL students. However, while at home this does not allow them to have the tools they need. In addition, I foresee that when we return to school, students will not be able to share such headsets safely in the current environment, rendering the small group sets woefully inadequate. Many of these activities pre-pandemic required the use of headsets, but now, without the ability to hold true small groups without the use of computer technology due to social distancing, these headsets will be even more essential than they ever have before to practicing speaking, listening, reading, and writing in small groups with a teacher.
