During Distance Learning, Kindergarten students are tasked with learning about letters, sounds, words, numbers, and other relationships that include the integration of 2 or more of those skills. Many students, especially students with special needs, require visuals and concrete examples to assist with those foundational skills. Students require hands-on practice in order to apply the skills being taught when segmenting and blending sounds in words. The use of magnetic letters as manipulatives will offer students at home the opportunity to apply those skills and share what they have created with their instructor virtually during live lessons. In addition, having magnetic numbers and tens frames will allow students to build and compare numbers in the same manner. Having their own supplies, including phonics journals, will provide additional visual supports and address accommodations that are needed for students without and without special needs for the effective implementation of reading and math interventions at home!
