Did you know that the main characters of children's books are more likely to be animals than kids of color? Did you know that when students see themselves reflected in the classroom that they're more likely to be engaged and feel that they belong at school? When we are back in person, I would love to add more diverse books to our classroom library and these will be a part of that. During distance learning, it's not possible to have these available for independent reading for students, but we still read books together daily and I want to incorporate different perspectives and languages that better reflect my students. I have English language learners from Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean and I want to make sure they are all welcomed through the books we use.
