I always knew that students needed movement in order to learn. Pre-COVID, I had them moving around the room on scavenger hunts, dance parties, doing the hokey-pokey! Whatever I could to give them a brain and body break. However, it wasn't until this fall that I saw what the lack of movement can really do; robbing some of my students of motivation, or curiosity, or inspiration. As we make every effort to keep students safely in school during this pandemic, we have tragically limited them from the real physical need to jump and touch a door jam or play tag with a friend at recess. These minutes in the day have become the lost treasures that I need to regain for my students if I want them to continue to feel comfortable and grown in the learning environment. To that end, I've purchase skip sticks, hula hoops, batons, and every other game that I can think of to keep them moving in their 6-foot bubble. Now I'm out of money, and out of ideas to help keep their bodies moving so their brains can keep moving too.
