Every child deserves the right to read, and they also deserve the right to read in their native language. It is proven that students develop language acquisition more easily with enough scaffolding and support within their native language initially. A great system in developing that support, and giving my students autonomy, would be the power of a bilingual classroom library. Our classroom has started to slowly develop a collection of books that is better equipped to meet students' needs and levels at language acquisition, but this project would immediately improve results beyond just English language development. The power of reading is the greatest gift you could ever give to a child. With it, comes the development of fluency, vocabulary, knowledge and curiosity. Reading challenges and drives students to learn, and it is especially important that positive reading habits are reinforced for children starting at an early age. For my students, it is still not too late. This collection of books will help develop student academic success, social and emotional development, and language development.
