The novel The President of the Whole Fifth Grade will be used in my classroom to make a connection between children their age and voting practices. I plan to conduct an election in our entire school in which the candidates are voted for by the students . This project will take place over 3-4 weeks. The students will learn about candidates, politics, lobbying, ballots and election outcomes! In the first week , the candidates will debate to be elected for class representative, in the second week, classes throughout the school will be listening to different students record themselves campaigning for the a spot in student council. In the third week, students will be debating for the final election. In the fourth week there will be a schoolwide election for the coveted spots of president of their whole grade where they will provide students with a voice. The paper will be used for the students' election campaigns, the creation of posters and ballots. In addition, the Scholastic News will be useful for us to gain an insight into government and civics lessons. Furthermore, the Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards will be used to help teach our students about our local, state and national systems of government and our great state of Texas, because that is what we cover in fourth grade. I am discovering there is a shortage social studies learning materials for upper elementary grade levels, so this will help my classroom tremendously.
